Major road damage in the storm

    We have a private association for a group of seasonal cottages that takes care of maintaining a dock and a road in Midcoast Maine. The road has been hit hard by the recent storm, resulting in significant damage. Thankfully, the houses themselves are okay, but many can not be reached by car. As we work towards rebuilding, we are wondering if anyone has suggestions or insights on how to secure funds to assist in the restoration of our road. Any advice or experiences with similar situations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    WOW. Your photo says it all!

    Recent coastal storms have produced record high water levels. The need for repair of infrastructure may be unprecedented!

    I believe state and federal funding may be available in the "disaster relief" category. The following are direct quotes from my recent Google Search: 

    1.    "Individuals can sign up for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). You will need to sign up for assistance at www.disasterassistance.gov (link). FEMA will decide if a grant will be given to you. Grants do not have to be repaid."

    The problem I think we will run into regarding FEMA is that these are not primary residences. We are reporting the damage for each of the two storms. However, I think that ALL roads have to be accessible to emergency vehicles – so maybe there's a loophole there?

    Should we be given any grants/funds to rebuild the road – there is the worry that this will just happen again. Hopefully not for a LONG time, but it certainly isn't in our favor at this point. 

    The contractor who maintains the road for us yearly claims that it can be made driveable by spring. It's hard to imagine given that photo! 

    There is room behind our houses to build a second road, but I'm not sure we can get all the members on board with the cost and idea of that.
