    I wanted to extend my thanks and appreciation to Betsy, Roberta, and many other's who have posted to the discussion forum and responded to my numerous messages.  

    I purchased my home on a town maintained public road in 1993.  Unbeknownst to us for many years, we learned that the only means of access to our home (on the town maintained public road) was to pass thru of two sections of private. These two sections were in different town.  We were under the misconception that it was all a town maintained public road!

    After many years of hard work by a lot of individuals, we were finally able to come to a compromise between the two towns, and several hundred property owners that benefited from the two sections of road.  These two sections are now town maintained public roads...

    As a side note, I also serve as road commissioner for a small road association in the Moosehead Lake Region.  This association is looking to implement Notice of Claim RE unpaid road association dues and assessments.  I look forward to getting answers to some of our open questions from this site.

    Doug, I have been following your public road/private road quagmire for several years, and have been thrilled to see how it has worked out!  To be honest, when I first became aware of your situation, I didn't have high hopes for a good outcome.  There were so many different parties involved, with such diverse opinions, I couldn't see how they could all be brought into agreement.  (Two town governments, residents on private roads in two towns, residents on public roads in both towns, residents of a large subdivision, proponents of seceding from their town, tax payers in both towns who do not live on the roads in question, etc.)  Many simpler road problems end up in Court, usually at tremendous expense, and often resulting in "solutions" that don't really work for any of the parties.  Kudos to all those who worked so hard to bring everyone into agreement with an outcome that serves all interests satisfactorily.   You and your neighbors provide a positive example and a source of hope to others who struggle with road maintenance disputes.  Thank you!
